What is “의”?

“의” is a particle in Korean that expresses possession, relationship, origin, attribute, or target. It is attached to a preceding noun to modify the following word.
In spoken Korean, “의” is often omitted.

2. Usage

1) Possession, Relationship, Origin, or Subject

“의” connects the preceding word to indicate ownership, affiliation, or relation.

이것은 제 친구의 책이에요. (This is my friend’s book.)
여기는 우리 가족의 집이에요. (This is my family’s house.)
서울의 겨울은 정말 춥네요. (Seoul’s winter is really cold.)
그 그림은 유명한 화가의 작품이에요. (That painting is a work by a famous artist.)

2) Attribute or Quantity

“의” is used to describe characteristics or quantities.

이 도시의 가장 큰 문제는 교통이에요. (The biggest problem in this city is traffic.)
한 잔의 커피로 하루를 시작해요. (Start your day with a cup of coffee.)
그녀는 높은 성적의 학생이에요. (She is a student with high grades.)
이 가방의 장점은 가벼운 무게입니다. (This bag’s advantage is its light weight.)

3) Whole and Part Relationships

“의” shows the relationship between the whole and its part.

학생들의 일부가 교실에 남아 있었어요. (Some of the students stayed in the classroom.)
그 책의 첫 페이지를 읽어 봤어요. (I read the first page of that book.)
한국의 남부 지역은 겨울에도 따뜻해요. (The southern region of Korea is warm even in winter.)
이 케이크의 윗부분은 초콜릿으로 되어있다. (The top of the cake is made of chocolate.)

4) Figurative Expressions

“의” is used in metaphorical or figurative relationships.

어려운 사람들에게 희망의 빛을 전해주세요. (Please bring a light of hope to those in need.)
그의 말은 위로의 손길 같았어요. (His words felt like a comforting hand.)
아이들의 웃음은 행복의 상징이에요. (Children’s laughter is a symbol of happiness.)
그 노래는 사랑의 메시지가 담겨 있었다. (The song was filled with a message of love.)

5) Target or Object of Action

“의” indicates the target or object of an action.

학생들의 교육에 많은 투자가 필요해요. (A lot of investment is needed in students’ education.)
환경의 보호는 늘 중요한 이슈입니다. (The protection of the environment is always an important issue.)
이 책은 한국 역사의 이해에 도움을 줘요. (This book helps the understanding of Korean history.)
지금 저희는 신약의 개발을 위해 연구 중이에요. (We’re studying for the development of new medicine.)
