What is “-(으)세요”?

“-(으)세요” is a polite Korean sentence-ending used to give commands, requests, or invitations in a courteous manner. Choose the form based on the final consonant of the verb stem:

• Verb stem with a final consonant: 으세요 (e.g., 읽다 → 읽으세요)
• Verb stem without a final consonant: 세요 (e.g., 가다 → 가세요)

1. Usage

1) Polite Command / Invitation

Used to politely tell someone what to do or invite them to do something.

• 입장하기 전에 티켓을 꺼내 주세요. (Please take out your ticket before entering.)
• 동물에게 먹이를 주지 마세요. (Please don’t feed the animals.)
• 여러분, 두 발짝만 뒤로 가세요. (Everyone, please step back two steps.)
• 가엾은 저에게 돈을 베풀어 주세요. (Please spare some money for poor me.)
• 위험하니까 주의해주세요. (Please be careful; it’s dangerous.)

2) Discourse Notes

Common in both casual and formal spoken settings as a soft command.
Do not use directly toward superiors—use indirect phrasing instead.

• 무례한: 선생님, 칠판에 글을 쓰세요. (Write on the board.) -> Sounds rude.
• 공손한: 선생님, 칠판에 글을 써주실 수 있으세요? (Could you please write on the board?)

3) Fixed Polite Expressions

Set phrases that conventionally end in “세요.”
