What is “(으)로”?

“(으)로” is a particle in Korean used to indicate direction, means, material, status, cause, choice, or range of calculation. Its form changes based on whether the preceding word has a final consonant (받침).

• Without a final consonant (받침 없음) or with ‘ㄹ’: Use -로
  Example: 학교 → 학교로, 길 → 길로
• With a final consonant (받침 있음) (except ‘ㄹ’): Use -으로
  Example: 집 → 집으로

1) Means, Tools, or Method

• 연필로 이름을 적었어요. (I wrote my name with a pencil.)
• 이메일로 연락을 받았어요. (I received the message by email.)
• 저는 매일 버스로 학교에 가요. (I go to school by bus every day.)
• 핸드폰으로 사진을 찍었어요. (I took a picture with my phone.)
• 이 문은 열쇠로 열어야 한다. (This door must be opened by a key.)

2) Direction

• 이 길로 곧장 가세요. (Go straight down this road.)
• 우체국으로 가는 버스를 탔어요. (I took the bus going to the post office.)
• 왼쪽으로 돌면 편의점이 나와요. (Turn left, and you’ll see a convenience store.)
• 많은 학생들이 외국으로 유학을 가고 있어요. (Many students are studying abroad.)
• 호텔로 가려면 저쪽으로 쭉 걸어가세요. (Walk straight that way to reach the hotel.)

3) Material

• 이 컵은 유리로 만들어졌어요. (This cup is made of glass.)
• 우리 집은 나무로 지어진 집이에요. (Our house is made of wood.)
• 이 책상은 플라스틱으로 제작되었어요. (This desk is made of plastic.)
• 그녀는 밀가루로 빵을 만들었어요. (She made bread with flour.)
• 이 천은 면으로 만들어져서 부드러워요. (This cloth is made of cotton, so it’s soft.)

4) Status or Role

• 지민이가 반장으로 선출됐어요. (Jimin was elected as class president.)
• 나는 이 사진을 추억으로 간직하고 있어요. (I keep this photo as a memory.)
• 그는 팀의 리더로 활동하고 있어요. (He is working as the team leader.)
• 그 아이는 가족의 자랑으로 여겨져요. (That child is regarded as the pride of the family.)
• 저 그림은 기념으로 사 둔 거예요. (I bought that drawing as a keepsake.)

5) Cause or Reason

• 폭우로 인해 행사가 취소됐어요. (The event was canceled due to heavy rain.)
• 감기로 학교에 못 갔어요. (I couldn’t go to school because of a cold.)
• 그의 실수로 문제가 생겼어요. (The problem happened because of his mistake.)
• 눈사태로 길이 막혔어요. (The road was blocked by an avalanche.)
• 어제 사고로 다쳤습니다. (I was injured by an accident yesterday.)

6) Choice or Decision

• 다음 모임 날짜를 토요일로 정했어요. (We set the date for the next meeting to Saturday.)
• 오늘 볼 영화는 코미디로 고를까요? (Shall I choose a comedy for today’s film?)
