What is “대로”?

“대로” is a Korean postposition that has two core functions:

• According to / in the manner of the preceding noun (“as, just like, following”).
• Separating or handling each item individually (“each … separately / respectively”).

It attaches to nouns such as 말 (words), 계획 (plan), 지시 (instruction), or categories you wish to treat separately.

1. Usage

1) According to / As per

Indicates that an action is performed exactly as the preceding word suggests.

• 규칙대로 따르거라. (Follow the rules as they are.)
• 쓰여진 주의사항대로 조심하도록 하세요. (Be careful according to the written precautions.)
• 내 바람대로 날씨가 좋았다. (The weather was good just as I wished.)
• 영화 내용도 원작인 소설대로 똑같이 흘러갔다. (The movie plot unfolded exactly like the original novel.)
• 당신이 알려준 대로 잘 따라했습니다. (I followed just as you instructed.)

2) Separating Each Item Respectively

Shows that two or more categories are handled each in its own way.

• 젖은 옷은 젖은 옷대로, 멀쩡한 옷은 멀쩡한 옷대로 따로 쌓아라. (Pile wet clothes with wet clothes and dry clothes with dry clothes.)
• 재활용품은 재활용품대로, 일반쓰레기는 일반쓰레기대로 버려주세요. (Please dispose of recyclables separately from regular trash.)
• 인간은 인간대로, 반려동물은 반려동물대로 따로 등록해야 합니다. (Humans and pets must each be registered separately.)
