1. What is 보다?
보다 is a particle used to indicate the object of comparison when comparing two or more things.
It attaches to the noun that serves as the basis for comparison.
Examples:
- 사과보다 → compared to an apple
- 처음보다 → compared to the beginning (earlier state)
2. Usage
1) Comparison Target
보다 is used to express that one thing is greater, lesser, or different in quality or quantity compared to another.
It frequently appears with comparative adverbs like 더 (more), 훨씬 (much more), 비교적 (relatively).
Grammatical note:
- Preceding word → noun or verb nominalized with -기
- Often followed by comparative adverbs
Examples:
- 치타가 사자보다 빠르지.
(A cheetah is faster than a lion.) - 예전보다 지금이 더 즐거워요.
(Now is more enjoyable than before.) - 나는 영화보다 책을 더 좋아합니다.
(I prefer books to movies.) - 공원에서보다 독서실에서 더 집중이 잘 되는군요.

3. Related Expression: 에 비해서
에 비해서 has a similar meaning to 보다 and can often be used interchangeably.
→ Example: 어제는 오늘보다 / 오늘에 비해서 추웠다. (Both are okay)
에 비해서 sounds more formal and is preferred in written or official contexts.
→ Example: 작년에 비해서 올해 매출이 더 높게 나왔습니다.
(Compared to last year, sales came out higher this year.)
When “compared based on a condition” is implied (like “considering…” or “relative to…”), 보다 is not acceptable.
- → 이 기종은 디자인에 비해서 인기가 없다. ✅
- → 이 기종은 디자인보다 인기가 없다. ❌
4. Combined Forms
