What is “부터”?

“부터” is a Korean postposition that marks the starting point of a range in time, place, order, or sequence. It often pairs with 까지 (“until”) to show both the start and end of a span.

1. Usage

1) Beginning of a Range (Time, Place, Order)

Indicates where or when something starts.

• 여기부터 저기까지 우리 땅입니다. (From here to there is our land.)
• 오늘부터 내일까지 비가 올 겁니다. (It will rain from today until tomorrow.)
• 봄부터 가을까지 더울 예정입니다. (It’s expected to be hot from spring through autumn.)
• 라면을 끓이기 전에 물부터 올려라. (Before cooking ramen, boil the water first.)

2) Frequently Paired with “까지”

Shows the full span from … to ….

• 당신은 내일부터 모레까지 바쁠 것입니다. (You’ll be busy from tomorrow to the day after.)
• 오늘 2시부터 5시까지 수업을 진행합니다. (Class runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.)
