What is “에”?

“에” is a versatile Korean particle used to express location, direction, time, target, cause, or unit. It frequently appears in sentences describing existence, movement, or specific situations.

2. Usage

1) Destination

“에” indicates the destination or goal of an action.

  • 아프면 병원에 가야 해요. (If you’re sick, you need to go to the hospital.)
  • 다들 고향에 돌아갔어요. (Everyone went back to their homeland.)
  • 친구가 서울에 방문했어요. (My friend visited Seoul.)
  • 택배가 집에 도착했어요. (The package arrived at home.)
  • 도서관에 갈 거예요. (I’ll go to the library.)

2) Location and Place

“에” marks the location of a person or object.

  • 책이 책상 위에 있어요. (The book is on the desk.)
  • 강아지가 마당에 있어요. (The dog is in the yard.)
  • 저는 지금 집에 있어요. (I am at home right now.)
  • 버스 정류장은 저기 앞에 있어요. (The bus stop is over there in the front.)
  • 지금 저는 카페에 있어요. (I’m at the café right now.)

3) Target

“에” indicates the target or object of an action or emotion.

  • 엄마가 식당에 전화를 걸었어요. (Mom called the restaurant.)
  • 친구가 한국 문화에 관심이 많아요. (My friend is very interested in Korean culture.)
  • 나는 저녁 풍경에 매료됐어요. (I was captivated by the evening’s scenery.)

4) Cause

“에” can indicate the cause of an event or situation.

  • 강한 바람에 문이 열렸어요. (The door opened because of the strong wind.)
  • 감기에 걸려서 기침에 시달렸어요. (I suffered from a cough because of a cold.)
  • 소음에 잠을 못 잤어요. (I couldn’t sleep because of the noise.)
  • 홍수에 마을이 큰 피해를 입었어요. (The village suffered great damage due to the flood.)
  • 어제 과제에 너무 신경을 썼어요. (I was too focused on my assignment yesterday.)

5) Unit

“에” is used to indicate units of measurement or frequency.

6) Time

“에” marks the time when an action or state occurs. It does not combine with words like “오늘, 어제, 내일.”

  • 우리는 주말에 여행을 갈 거예요. (We will go on a trip on the weekend.)
  • 저는 작년에 한국에 갔었어요. (I went to Korea last year.)
