What is “하고”?

“하고” is a colloquial Korean postposition that:

• Links two equal nouns (A and B)
• Marks the partner you do something with
• Shows the object of comparison

It is less formal than 과/와 and slightly more formal than (이)랑.

1. Usage

1) Equal Connection

Links two or more items/people equally.

• 이 가방은 빨간색하고 파란색이 있어요. (This bag comes in red and blue.)
• 할머니하고 할아버지는 같이 사세요. (Grandma and Grandpa live together.)
• 이 가게는 화요일하고 목요일에 문을 엽니다. (This shop opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays.)
• 제가 원하는 선물은 화장품하고 인형이에요. (The gifts I want are cosmetics and a doll.)
• 그 여자는 드라마하고 영화를 좋아해요. (She likes dramas and movies.)

2) Comparison

Used with verbs like “be the same as,” “different from,” “suit,” etc.

• 나하고 언니는 닮지 않았어요. (My older sister and I don’t look alike.)
• 사진이 실물하고 달라요. (The photo looks different from the real thing.)
• 오늘 의상이 장소하고 잘 어울립니다. (Today’s outfit matches the venue well.)

3) Partner / Companion

Marks the partner for actions that cannot be done alone.

• 오늘 동생하고 싸웠어요. (I fought with my younger sibling today.)
• 아빠하고 같이 갈게요. (I’ll go with Dad.)
• 사촌언니는 경찰하고 결혼했어요. (My cousin married a police officer.)
• 오랜만에 친구하고 만났습니다. (I met up with a friend after a long time.)

2. Related Forms

• 과/와 (formal, written): 건강을 위해 균형 잡힌 식사와 운동이 중요합니다.
• (이)랑 (more informal, friendly): 저에게 레고랑 시계를 사주셨어요.

3. Combined Particles

“하고” can combine with other particles to broaden its meaning:

• 이 음식은 술하고도 잘 어울립니다. (This dish goes well even with alcohol.)
• 저는 언니하고는 친한데 여동생하고는 안 친해요. (I’m close with my older sister but not with my younger sister.)
• 좋아하는 사람들하고만 어울리고 싶어요. (I only want to hang out with people I like.)
