What is “(이)니”?

“(이)니” is a Korean postposition used to list two or more nouns on equal footing—roughly meaning “this or that, such-and-such.”

• After a noun with a final consonant, use 이니 (e.g. 말 → 말이니)
• After a noun without a final consonant, use 니 (e.g. 소 → 소니)

1) Enumeration of Similar Items

Links multiple nouns of the same category, often implying that all share a common situation.

• 말이니 소니 가축들이 많이 보이네요. (I see lots of livestock such as horses and cows.)
• 감자튀김이니 햄버거니 건강에 안 좋은 건 마찬가지야. (French fries or hamburgers—either way, they’re bad for your health.)
• 그 사람은 여자니 남자니 할 것 없이 모두에게 존경받았지. (That person was respected by everyone, male or female.)
• 요새 천둥번개니 먹구름이니 날씨가 참 별로네요. (These days it’s thunder, dark clouds—the weather’s awful.)

2) Expression “~(이)니 ~(이)니 하다”

Used to express “to say this and that; despite various things.”

• 뭐니 뭐니 해도 역시 우리나라 꽃이 제일 예뻐요. (Say what you will, but our national flower is still the prettiest.)
• 고기니 파스타니 처음에는 맛있어 보여도 나중에는 밥이 제일 먹기 편하다. (Meat or pasta may look tasty at first, but in the end rice is the easiest to eat.)
