What is “-(이)라고”?
“-(이)라고” is a particle used when directly quoting or relaying someone else’s words. It attaches to nouns or quoted expressions.
- If the noun ends with a final consonant →
-이라고 - If the noun ends with a vowel →

1. Usage
1) Direct Quotation
Used to quote speech or writing. Usually followed by verbs like 하다, 묻다, 듣다, 쓰다, 부르다, 믿다, 생각하다, etc.
- 저 사람은 “그건 아니다.”라고 했습니다.
- 한국 사람들은 자러 갈 때에 “안녕히 주무세요”라고 합니다.
- 문 앞에 “당기시오”라고 쓰여있네요.
- 제 이름은 은지라고 합니다.
- “음식이 맛이 없다”라고 리뷰를 쓴 게 당신인가요?
2. Discourse Information
This particle is often used in formal or neutral contexts to objectively relay quoted content. Common in news reports, announcements, interviews, etc.
- 박 회장은 “아직은 합병 계획이 없음”이라고 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.
3. Related Indirect Quotation Forms
- Declarative (statement) → -다고
예: 종이가 부족하다고 프린터가 깜빡입니다. - Interrogative (question) → -냐고
