What is “-께서”?

“-께서” is an honorific subject marker in Korean. It is the respectful version of the basic subject particles 이/가 and is used when the subject deserves respect (e.g., elders, teachers, superiors).

1. Usage

1) Honorific Subject

Use 께서 when the subject of the sentence refers to someone respected. This form is commonly paired with the honorific verb ending -(으)시-.

Examples:

  • 선생님께서 우리 집에 오셨어요. (The teacher came to our house.)
  • 할머니께서 요리를 하십니다. (Grandmother is cooking.)
  • 이 술은 어르신께서 주신 겁니다. (This drink was given by the elder.)
  • 대표님께서 월급을 주셨습니다. (The CEO gave me the salary.)

2. Discourse Information

“-께서” is used when referring to respected individuals, often in formal or polite settings.

  • 김 회장은 오늘 귀국합니다. (Appropriate for news reports)
  • 김 회장님께서 오늘 귀국하십니다. (Too casual for news context)

3. Related Expression: “-이/가”

Use 이/가 for neutral or non-honorific subjects. Use 께서 only when the subject should be honored.

  • 남자친구가 저를 좋아해요. ✔
  • 할아버지께서 저에게 칭찬을 해 주셨어요. ✔
