What is “-만”?

“-만” is a particle used to limit or emphasize something by excluding everything else. It attaches to nouns or nominalized verbs (e.g., -기 forms).

Example: 물 → 물만 (only water), 공부하기 → 공부하기만 (just studying)

1. Usage

1) Only ~ (Limitation)

Shows that only the preceding element applies, excluding all others. Mostly used with nouns.

• 공부만 하면 지루하니까 놀자. (Just studying is boring, so let’s have some fun.)
• 종이만 재활용이 가능합니다. (Only paper can be recycled.)
• 채소는 안 먹고 고기만 먹었습니다. (I didn’t eat any vegetables, only meat.)
• 다들 나만 두고 멀리 가버렸어. (Everyone left, leaving only me behind.)
• 이런 날씨만 계속됐으면 좋겠네요. (I wish the weather stayed like this.)

Related expression: 밖에 is used with negative expressions to show limitation or lack.

• 나는 과자가 하나밖에 없어. (I have only one snack.)
• 저 사람은 커피밖에 안 마셔. (That person drinks nothing but coffee.)

2) Emphasis

Used to emphasize a limited subject, object, or action. Often with adverbs or -고/-기 endings.

• 그저 웃지만 말고 도와주세요. (Don’t just laugh—please help.)
• 좋기만 한데 왜 불만일까요? (It’s only good, so why is there a complaint?)
• 눈물이 날 것만 같네요. (It feels like I’m about to cry.)

3) Minimum Level

Used to limit something to the minimum required amount. Often with units like 개, 번, 원, 시간, 분.

• 500원만 있으면 살 수 있어. (You can buy it with just 500 won.)
• 지금 이 상품은 두 개만 남아있습니다. (Only two of this item are left now.)
• 한 시간만 더 기다려줄 수 있을까요? (Could you wait just one more hour?)
• 다섯 번만 더 이기면 우승입니다. (Win five more times and we’re champions.)

4) Minimum Condition

Indicates the least condition needed for something to happen. Often with nouns or -기 nominalized forms.

• 여기까지만 와도 잘 한 편이죠. (You did well just by making it this far.)
• 500ml만 넣어도 라면 끓이기엔 충분합니다. (Just 500ml is enough for ramen.)
• 이제 키보드만 사면 게임을 할 수 있어요. (Once I buy a keyboard, I can play.)

5) Standard of Comparison

Indicates the preceding element as the comparison basis. Often followed by -하다, -같다, -못하다.

• 그녀의 눈이 왕방울만 하게 커졌다. (Her eyes got as big as marbles.)
• 햇살 좋은 풍경이 천국만 같습니다. (The sunny scenery looks just like heaven.)
• 이 선수는 저번 선수만 못하다. (This player isn’t as good as the last.)
• 이 공룡의 키는 거의 기린만 하네요. (This dinosaur is almost as tall as a giraffe.)
